    Project Overview

$Millions in savings delivered by reducing fuel, maintenance, labor, and salt usage for Departments of Transportation

A Department of Transportation with a 2,000+ truck fleet for winter operations was looking for a fleet management solution to help reduce salt usage, fuel, maintenance, labor, liability costs and automate EPA compliance.

    The Challange

  • Winter operation fleets need a single GPS/AVL platform that can ingest and fuse four very different data streams: engine diagnostics, precise vehicle location, hydraulics performance, and changing road-weather conditions—to keep winter roads safe.
  • The core challenge is ensuring each stream is accurately captured and continuously calibrated, then turning that raw data into real-time insights on vehicle routes, material application, and road status. Without that end-to-end integration and validation, fleet managers can’t make the timely, data-driven decisions required to optimize coverage, control costs, and safeguard the traveling public.
  • Our Solution

We delivered Sidecar for end-to-end fleet visibility, purpose-built for winter maintenance. Field-tested gateways collect rich engine, hydraulic, GPS, and environmental data from both heavy and light vehicles, encrypt it, and stream it to a secure Microsoft Azure cloud environment. Open-source, .NET/MVC web apps convert this data into real-time dashboards and analytics that guide routing, material usage, and safety decisions.

    Features:
  • Integration with existing equipment – Sidecar seamlessly connects to existing hydraulics, GPS, and spreader sensors
  • Real-time video and data monitoring – Live vehicle location, heading and spreader status, plus a 72-hr dash cam archive
  • Resilient data capture – Even if cellular service drops, Sidecar stores data locally and syncs once reconnected, ensuring uninterrupted records
  • Predictive analytics and reporting – AI-powered route optimization, salt usage analysis, idle time reduction, and EPA compliance automation

    The Results

$16,500 – $41,000 in savings per truck annually
Sidecar delivered measurable ROI by reducing fuel, maintenance, labor, and liability costs

    Fuel Efficiency & Route Optimization
Smarter routing and reduced idle time save 5–15% in fuel use — that’s up to $7,500 in fuel savings per truck each year.

    Maintenance Cost Reduction
Engine diagnostics and hydraulic monitoring prevent emergency breakdowns, saving $2,000–$5,000 per truck.

    Labor & Productivity Gains
Predictive planning reduces unnecessary trips and overtime. Saving just 10% in driver hours can equal $6,000 per truck.

    Accident Reduction & Insurance Savings
Dash cam visibility and driver alerts reduce accident rates by up to 50%, cutting insurance costs by as much as $8,000/year.
